Dean Reading was raised on a ranch in Fort Bend County, Texas. Having competed in high school and college rodeos, he went on to compete in professional rodeos in the seventies and eighties. Reading graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas with a Bachelor's Degree in History and English and a secondary Teaching Certificate.
